Priorities

I mentioned last Monday that I was invited to take a test for a new job.  I’m happy to report that I passed!  They sent me some forms to fill out and some videos to watch to train me for the job.

When I checked my email on Wednesday morning, I was informed that I was good to go and could start working.  The work in this company is self assigned, so you could work as much or as little as you want.  However, I found out that they usually send out the files to be worked on at around 6 am, my time.  I’m still asleep at that time, then I have to bring my daughter to school, then take my morning walk.  I’m usually home by 8 am, then I have to eat breakfast and do the chores.  So, by the time I read the email, it was almost 10 am and there was no more work to be done.

So, I have a dilemma, should I work after bringing Yumi to school, or should I still walk and if there’s no more work, then sorry.  I could take the files before I bring Yumi to school, then take a walk but I might not finish the work within the deadline.  I certainly don’t want to miss deadlines so early in the game.

As it turns out, they sometimes send files at other times.  Yesterday, they sent it early evening my time.  By that time though, I couldn’t work on it either since I’m doing online English conversation lessons at night.  Today, they sent it around noon.  Finally, I got to work on a decent number of files.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, I forgot to eat lunch because of that.

I have to figure out a way to do this properly.  I have decided that I will continue walking.  I enjoy my time outdoors, and it’s my only exercise.  I should also discipline myself to check for new files only at certain times of the day.  There is no need to check it every five minutes.  Finally, I should realize that this is just extra work, we won’t starve without it so there’s no point in stressing myself.

If you’ll excuse me, I need to check the file before I go to bed. 🙂

Last Saturday, we got a free energy meter from Milo.  They had a promotion where you can get it for free for every Php 200 worth of purchase of Milo products.  So we got one when we went to the supermarket last weekend.

It was basically a pedometer and it also gives an estimate of the miles and kilometers walked as well as the calories burned from walking.  The packaging also said that making 10,000 steps or more per day is an indicator of an energetic life (or something like that).

It’s actually the second time that I’ve received a pedometer.  My sister gave me one a few years ago which I unfortunately lost.  But at that time, I didn’t really have a goal and I didn’t know how many steps I should be making in a day.

So I was really excited to find out this time if I am making 10,000 steps in a day.  I wore it the whole day on Sunday which was a typical weekend for me.  I wasn’t terribly busy but it wasn’t a lazy day either.  I did the laundry, defrosted the freezer, made pizza dough and cooked vegetables for Yumi’s lunch the next day.  At the end of the day, I ended up with just 2,300 steps.  That was a real disappointment.  And I thought I had been active that day.

The next day, Yumi wore it to school.  She did all the regular things 7 year-olds do and she ended the day at 10,480.  She’s a really active child.  Sometimes she’s telling a story and she’d just walk around while doing so.  She plays with the neighbors and is hardly still, unless she’s drawing or studying.

On Tuesday, Jari wore it school.  Again, it was a regular day, no PE or training or anything.  And he ended the day at roughly 11,000.  He said his classmates pressed the reset button so he just added up what he remembered and the ending tally at the end of the day.

So now, I really wanted to reach 10,000.  Yesterday, I wore it again.  I knew for sure that I’d reach it that time since I went on my usual one hour walk after bringing Yumi to school.  Then of course I did my usual chores around the house and picked Yumi up in the afternoon.  So, do you think I made it?

I didn’t!  I ended up with 9038 steps!  I think the pedometer’s broken.  Don’t you?

Zumba Live!

I am so proud of myself today.  I’ve been busy baking the whole morning and was sorely tempted to surf the internet and read blogs afterwards but I forced myself to exercise instead.

I’ve been doing Zumba for three weeks now.  The first week, I did it once.  The second week, I did it twice.  Since this is the third week, I’m really hoping I get to do it thrice as my goal is to exercise three times a week without fail.  I’m hoping that third time’s the charm.  Today was the second time I did it this week and if all goes well, I should do it again on Friday.

I have a love-hate relationship with exercise, which I’m sure you all can relate with.  I’ve enrolled in the gym, did running, swimming, walking and all sorts of videos.  Unfortunately, I always quit after a month or so.  I love the feeling of sweating, knowing that I’m melting the fats in my body and when my muscles ache, I know that my workout was successful.  But motivation is always a problem.  It’s so hard to convince myself to work out and I always come up with excuses not to do it.

I’ve been staying at home for almost two months now and yet I still have not made a habit of exercising.  I am embarrassed when people more busy than I find the time to do it.  So now, I really, really will exercise.  I promise!  (fingers crossed =D)
